5. EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Courseware Development
From 1997 to Dec. 31, 2001 I competed for and received two large-scale Teaching Development Grants (HK$5,000,000.) funded by the University Grants Committee and City University of Hong Kong for which I was the Principal Investigator. Working from a pedagogically driven perspective, I designed and directed the development and evaluation of the courseware: Virtual Language University, an interactive multimedia programme and web site. The team consisted of three script writers, three programmers, and a graphic designer. The purpose of the project was to develop courseware for autonomous learning. My belief is that technology can be used effectively as an adjunct to teaching, not only to motivate students to learn, but also to assist them in learning more effectively and to keep them on task while supporting a wide variety of learning styles. My aim is to design user-friendly learning environments that hold the interest of students and help them to navigate efficiently, and to design tasks, as well as feedback for tasks, that further a deep approach to learning.
Teaching Goals
Teaching Philosopy. As a Teaching Excellence Award winner, the difference I hope to make with students is that they will be motivated to continue learning after they have left my course. My primary goal in teaching is to build student ownership into learning, that is, where students take responsibility for their own learning. I believe this is crucial to students becoming creative and independent learners. We cannot force students to learn anything; what we can do is act as a catalyst in the process of learning - we can ignite their interest so learning becomes an enjoyable experience. So, I see myself as a facilitator in the learning process, helping students to gain confidence to internalize concepts and thus to apply them to new situations. My hypothesis is that unless students reach the "Aha" stage of understanding, they have not truly learned. An example of this would be where, after I have explained a concept to students, they nod their head in understanding and provide examples showing that they can relate the concept to their personal situation. My purpose is to help them reach this stage through elicitation and reflection. By asking successive questions, I lead students to their own understanding and, thus, bring them to the "aha" stage of learning.
Integration of Technology. As students learn best when they are actively involved in what they are doing, a means whereby I try to instigate autonomous learning is through the use of self-initiated learning tasks through the use of technology. I have had most success in using information technology to challenge students to direct their own learning. I also strive to teach students effective communication skills with the use of technology - the skills that employers are looking for today. I try to use a variety of specific methods that may help different students gain confidence. This is achieved through class discussions, electronic discussions, student presentations and sharing of information electroncially.
